Sinus Floor Elevation (sinus lift)
Maxillary sinus is like a balloon full of air that is located above the upper jawbone and under the eye.
Usually after extraction of the back upper teeth, two things happen. The first is that the jawbone shrinks in size. The second is that the balloon, the maxillary sinus, expands in size. These two things combined leave very little bone for implant placement.
To overcome this, maxillary sinus floor elevation (sinus lift) is a procedure where the balloon, the maxillary sinus, is pushed up surgically creating space for bone graft insertion, to allow for implant placement either simultaneously or at a later time.
This procedure is preferably done under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation, however it can also be done under local anaesthetic.
